Katherine is a brilliant test case for new dishes, especially those that smack of health, fashionability or hippy weirdiness. Her natural resistance is so high, her prejudices so entrenched, that only the strongest contenders can survive. And so it was with bliss balls, which I'd been bleating to her about for some time.

Strawberries and rhubarb are a heavenly combination, with the earthy tangy of rhubarb offsetting the sweet fragrance of the strawberries. Spend 10 minutes making this and you will be rewarded by at least a week's worth of luxurious breakfasts (on granola with a dollop of yoghurt, on French toast, on pancakes...) or top with a crumble for a quick dessert for six.

This gingerbread house is not for the faint hearted, but wonderful to have a go at. Even if it isn't a total success, disasters are usually more memorable! If you have bought a Dinner Ladies gingerbread kit, ignore the parts of the recipe for making dough and icing.
